**: KOI – A vizek szennyezettségüktől függően tartalmaznak olyan szerves, lebegő és oldott anyagokat, amelyek erős oxidálószerekkel (pl. permanganáttal, dikromáttal, stb.) oxidálhatók. A vizek szerves szennyezettségének mértékét, a szerves szennyezőanyag-tartalmat szabványos körülmények között végrehajtott oxidálásuk során fogyott oxidálószer mennyiségével ill. az ezzel egyenértékű oxigénmennyiséggel fejezik ki. Ezt nevezik kémiai oxigénigénynek (KOI-nak), amit O2 mg/dm egységekben adnak meg.

A háztartási méretű biológiai szennyvíztisztító berendezés a földbe ásott gödörbe egy kb. 10 cm vastagságú szerelőbetonra kerül elhelyezésre úgy, hogy a tartály teteje mintegy 5 cm-re a föld szintje fölé kerül.
Amennyiben szükséges a helyi adottságok miatt, úgy a tartály körüli alsó rész is betonozásra kerül (ez nagyrészt a magas talajvízszint esetén szükséges). A szennyvíztisztító berendezés vízzel való feltöltése a kifolyócső magasságáig szükséges a tartály körüli föld visszatöltését megelőzően.
